Summer Show 2008

Hello and welcome back to the Wanborough Show, or, if you a newcomer, hello and welcome.

This Year's Show will be on Saturday the 16th August. We hope to bring you a days entertainment of the highest quality set against the beautiful backdrop of Liddington Hill and the Wiltshire Downs.

Following the cancellation in June this year of our Horse and Dog show and the appalling weather of last year’s ‘Summer’ show, I hope that this show is blessed with good weather.

Our main source of revenue is through you attending our shows and last year we had a deficit of over £3,000 due to the poor weather and a drastically reduced attendance. Now we are faced with losses from our June show this year. We have considered small amounts of sponsorship but wish to remain mostly independent from sponsor’s demands and continue to be a family-oriented event.

We provide a full days entertainment for all the family, from the very young through to our valued seniors. At £10 for two adults and two children for a full day’s entertainment, we consider it good value and although we are not a charity, we do give any ‘spare’ money to local organisations.

The green team this year includes 12 to 16 year olds and we need these youngsters because they are the future of the show: we need ther input and help in order to keep the show vibrant and appealing to all ages.

Have a look through the programme, see what interests you and get cooking, training your dog, practicing your jumping or making your costume for the carnival. Whatever you do in taking part, or as a spectator, I wish you all a jolly fun day.

On a personal note, this will be my last year as Chairman. It’s been great fun, often a challenge, I’ve met a lot of smashing people and it is something I can look back on with pride. What that does mean, however, is that we will need a new Chairperson from January next year, so why not express an interest and g o for it? Catch me on the day and we can talk about what it means to the individual and to the Village.

See you soon - Martin Ripley,
Chairman,
signing off.

Artizani - Desert Island Discs

This popular and spectacular show involves an island shaped stage with two palm trees set at jaunty angles on either side. The show is performed to music and loaded with visual gags. In a grand finale of tightropes and buried treasure, the Castaway unwittingly invokes the curse of the claw and his island paradise is transformed in a most surprising way.

Desert Island Discs was everything that is good and right in street theatre. …the story of a castaway who starts the show determined to keep up standards …Dressed properly for dinner, with stiff upper lip, he is keen to show that he can tame the wild. But of course nature bites back ...classic physical clowning that is on a direct line of descent from Keaton and Chaplin…he makes it look like anyone could do it, but in truth few can perform with such assurance, or entertain so well, in the public space.

Matt Bernard

Man of tweed A comedy show in which the character changes from a skilful, sophisticated country gent, beautifully attired in bespoke tweed suit, to a string vest-wearing yob sporting Union Jack shorts and complete with knotted handkerchief on his head. The Man of Tweed performs artistic and cultural ball spinning skills until his clothes are ripped off to reveal the truth beneath.

The final stunt is one perfect for such a comedy character, as he balances a pint of beer on his head, drinks the beer through a plastic tube and juggles at the same time! The show is best performed at large events and festivals, or in high streets with plenty of space as it is sure to attract a large crowd.

The Balloon Wizard & Antics Crew

The Balloon Wyzzyrd is always at-home amongst "Children of ALL Ages!"
Working without a script, and seizing the "Moment", he conjours up the most harmless fun and frivolity from just about any situation!!

Since 1993, people have been "discovering" the Balloon Wyzzyrd.. An appreciative and loyal client-base has grown "organically" as people continue to pass on my details to their friends, colleagues and fellow event organisers!! In fact this may be how YOU came to be reading this today!! 25 years' experience of working with young people of-all-ages has seen him wearing a variety of serious as well as fun "hats".. [ Originally a JNC Qualified Community and Youth Worker, erstwhile Social Action Broadcasting Radio Presenter.. [amongst other things].. He somehow drifted into the Arcane Mistery of Latex Twiddlology, and cannot believe how "fortunate" this has been in so many ways!!]

Supported by Anni, Spud (Peter Frank the youngest member) and Paul. The balloon Wizard brings you the antics crew. Guest appearances by Twizzle Gumboot and his wife Tina Turnip plus Paul the puppet man will give you his take on the traditional Punch and Judy show

Britannia Majorettes

The Britainnia Majorette troupe was founded in Swindon in September 2004 and performed publicly for the first time in May 2005. We were founded not by the Nolan sisters who 'were in the mood for dancing' but the Ellis sisters who were and still are in the mood for marching.

Three of the four sisters are former majorettes so between them have a great deal of experience and knowledge. We perform drills to our own marching band with some instruments being played by girls as young as 8 and our eldest member being only 12 years old.

Previously to joining Britannia Majorettes many had never experienced the pleasure of playing a musical instrument. This goes to show what can be achieved in a short period of time with a lot of hard work and dedication by both girls and team leaders.

In addition to the band, Britannia Majorettes centre piece is the formations carried out by the girls ranging from 6 to 10 years of age co-ordinating their footwork with pom pom routines.

Britannia Majorette's have performed at many different events, in and around Wiltshire, over the past two years including Coming first in the Old Town Festival Procession and opening the British Transplant Games that were held in Bath.

If you are interested in joining, they meet on Friday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. For joining or booking information you can access their website here .

Live Music

Soulsmith
Soulsmith

Soulsmith are a three piece rock group that has been gigging all over Southern England for the last year or so. Quickly developing from an acoustic project into a full on funk-rock band, the band seem to be shaping quite a diverse sound ranging from funk, rock and metal, through to soul, blues and grunge.

In March 2008, Soulsmith released their first album "Obsessed With Hiding". The album has received rave reviews from both critics and fans alike, and is available to buy from the band at their gigs for 5 of your English Pounds (Sterling).

With an ever-increasing gig list and growing interest from a selection of independent labels, Soulsmith are going to be a band to get out and see Check out their pages on MySpace

Acoustic Taxi
Liddington

Acoustic Taxi are; Jules Hill - Vocals/(guitar) & Jim Burge - Guitar/B.V's

They were both members of original Funk/Soul/Rock band 'Afro Taxi', which was formed early in 2005. Whilst the band had a re-shuffle early 2006, they were approached to do acoustic slots at various local venues. It was an area they had not really ventured into before but it went down well and brought regular gigs which helped to hone their writing skills. To date, some of their appearances have included, support slots for 'Hazel O Connor & The Subterraneans', 'Glen Tilbrook' (ex-squeeze, guitarist) & Graham Bonnet (Rainbow)

They are currently both teachers of guitar and vocals and hold showcases to enable wannabe musicians/singers to perform in a live gig environment. In Previous years, they have been involved in entertainment and music in some form or another, playing and performing for various projects. both are parts of other bands which all adds to the creative pot. Currently planning to go into the studio to record new acoustic & band tracks, also looking to add extra sounds to both sets in the near future, their influences are eclectic ranging from Funk and Soul through to Rock and Indie. Too many to mention! Check out their pages on MySpace
